Obituary for Dr. J.T. Jabbour
Dr. J.T. Jabbour passed away peacefully on July 11, 2016 at the age of 88.

Born on August 5, 1927 in Tiptonville, TN, he was the son of Freda (Hamra) and T.J. (George) Jabbour. His father emigrated from Marjayoun, Lebanon and established a dry goods store where J.T. worked in his youth. He was a member of the Tiptonville First United Methodist Church.

As a Navy corpsman 1945-46, J.T. escorted wounded soldiers across the country by train from California back to their hometowns which motivated him to pursue his medical career. After service in the U.S. Navy, he received his B.S. degree from the University of Tennessee Knoxville and his medical degree from the University of Tennessee College of Medicine in 1951. His earliest stint was as a General Practitioner in Ridgely, TN. He completed his medical training in Dallas, Memphis, and Minneapolis. He became the first Chairman of Pediatric Neurology at the University of Oklahoma, Oklahoma City before joining the faculty of the University of Tennessee Memphis and Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital where he practiced until his recent retirement. His legendary good humor helped nurture long term relationships with patients and their families over many years. His clinical research that related viral infections to a rare form of encephalitis earned him international recognition.

The rewards of his 50+ years of medical practice were evident in his eagerness to greet families, deploy his cheery disposition to put patients at ease, and nurture friendships throughout the hospitals and clinics in Memphis, Germantown, West Memphis and Paragould, AR. His extremely devoted staff, his long-term patients and their caring families, and the larger Le Bonheur community all felt Dr. Jabbour came to work daily mostly to see them. When time allowed, he loved to travel, frequent antique shops, and attend family reunions.
Dr. Jabbour is predeceased by his brothers, Dr. C. Eugene Jabbour and Dr. Richard E. Jabbour. He is survived by his wife, Helen (Block), and his children Ben (and Nora) of Memphis, Magda McCormick (and Michael) of Cambridge, MA, Kenny (and Margaret) of Memphis, Monica Metz (and Mark) of Atlanta GA, Elena Caron (and Eric) of Memphis as well as eight grandchildren: Benjamin and Cristina Jabbour, Thomas and Elena McCormick, Madeline and Andrew Metz, Jack and Julia Jabbour and a host of relatives both near and far.
The family wishes to acknowledge the staff at both Allen Morgan Health & Rehabilitation at Trezevant and Crossroads Hospice who were so devoted to his care.

Visitation will be 5:00-7:00 p.m. Thursday, July 14 at Canale Funeral Directors.
A celebration of J.T.’s life will be held in St. Edward Chapel at Trezevant Manor, Friday, July 15th at 2:00 p.m.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Le Bonheur Children’s Hospital, the Church Health Center, or MIFA.
